In his works, Rafael Alonso proposes negotiations between his daily life and his artistic practice – investigating the possibilities of articulation between the experience of day-to-day and painting. Alonso tests fields of action for color, form, and gesture, without removing painting from its critical model of reflection on its time and place. The artist has a bachelor degree in painting from Escola de Belas Artes – UFRJ, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in visual languages. Important solo exhibitions include: Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 2017; Paço Imperial, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 2012; Paço das Artes, São Paulo, Brazil, 2011  and Centro Cultural São Paulo, Brazil, 2006. He was awarded with the Prêmio Funarte de Arte Contemporânea, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2011; as well as the SIM award for visual arts from the Department of Culture of the State of Pará, Brazil. He was also a finalist for the Iberê Camargo Grant, Porto Alegre, Brazil, 2005.
